The presentation will examine the disputed/contested memory of the NamibianGenocide, focusing on the recent Genocide Remembrance Day. It traces the historyof the controversy, from Germany’s initial denial to its eventual acceptance of thegenocide; It will highlight internal Namibian disagreements over the naming of thegenocide, who should negotiate with Germany – the government or directlyaffected/targeted communities. It further will touch on issues with the recentRemembrance Day, noting affected communities’ complaints about a lack ofconsultation and the chosen date of May 28th. The presentation concludes byexploring how these ongoing disagreements impact the formation of a sharedcollective memory and affect reconciliation and historical justice.
